I didn’t see that coming… We often wonder where to start, is it the beginning, middle or end, do I start with the pandemic, the fact that I fell out of love with running, my boy heading off to university and the fact that my body no longer bleeds. Shall I start with the positives, […]

My day today consisted of coaching; I’m often asked with the selection of services I offer what it all means.

My clients today have been a mixture of fitness professionals and people coming to fitness for the first time, One client in her 50s embarking on exercise for the first time in her life.

For her my service is diet, sports massage, and NLP training.

I will see her every week for six weeks.

Our first appointment today was all about me getting to know her, her goals and how she works as a human being.

I look at a person as a whole.

Married or single

Type of diet

Present or past illnesses

We are all often in a rush to get to yesterday before we even reach tomorrow.

With this particular client today, it was more about cutting out sugar, encouraging better portion sizes and taking in more water.

Next week we will look at her diet and incorporate some sports massage or stretching.

Leading up to week three her new routine will start getting a little harder and she will be finding every reason why to quit and not keep going.

That is what we do when it gets hard, we start justifying the other things in our life and its importance.

Week 4 we look at her journal to see how she is getting on.

Exercise, sleep, mindset.

We will also have been weighing and measuring throughout this period and checking how the body feels.

NLP plays a massive role in my teaching.

Taking old habits away and implementing new ones.

Our minds are immensely powerful and when we can teach our mind what we want, rather than our mind telling us what to do, we can be successful in anything.

Creating and helping my client stick to new routines will help her become successful in her chosen goal, journaling is massively important in achieving success.

Often when I meet new clients, they come to me for one thing and I always find that they need something else or something more to what they thought they did.

They may have come for Reiki to help with anxiety when in actual fact their poor diet or long working hours is causing most of it.

Its always helpful for someone to take a different look on things.

The rest of my afternoon consisted of a very boggy run for myself in prep for next year’s racers and a beautiful yoga session with Sarah and Hannah.

Please feel free to reach out to me for guidance or assistances.

Have a great weekend.

In light Shankara ❤️❤️

In the year 2050, plastic in our oceans will outweigh fish.

Until we start focusing on what needs to be done rather that what is politically possible, there is no hope.

We cannot solve a crisis without treating it as a crisis. we need to keep the fossil fuels in the ground and we need to focus on equity.

And if solutions within the system are so impossible to find then maybe we should change the system itself.

Ok So !!!!

That Bit said, I really don’t like heavy talk, it can come over really aggressive, and I BELIEVE to change peoples opinions we need to educate with compassion and not anger.

I don’t know about you but I certainly switch off when peoples passion over takes their voice with loud noise.

So as a human being and part of a collective I feel if we work together we can make big changes for our future generations to come.

Knowledge is the Bomb Right!!!!! And lets be honest we never really hear the facts on global warming unless the government are telling us what to do and spend.

I’m part of a large family and a family with four teenagers, hell you can imagine the amount of plastic that, ill be open to admit is still going into my bin weekly.

I wont drink tap water, straight from the tap,

The chemicals with in for obvious reasons far out weighs the disease in it !!! obviously that is just my opinion on the disease that is !!!! lol but the chemicals to protect us are massively dangerous to our body also, high blood pressure being one of the side effects.

So over my life I have bought shop bottled water and glass whenever possible…..But being a girl that Absolutely hates shopping in any form I wouldn’t travel miles if the chosen shop only had plastic. Don’t judge me :-))))

ASDA do a great supply of VOSS water bottles 🙂

I respect the Saying of “you do you, and I will do me” ….

A Couple of years ago now I invested in a Dam good water filter, still this was hard for me to remember to drink water initially as the jug was sat there in the sink!!!!! YES right in front of me ;-0 and not a opened water bottle giving me the incentive of achieving my 2 1/2 litres of recommended daily water allowance that i was used too.

Sooooooo “Hurry up, I hear you say”. Where is this going??? ah, ……… well now I keep all my Really large mason jars and the lids for water. We have always recycled all our glass items since starting a family anyway and I will always pick say a jar of mayo over a carton for the kids, so effort as always been present, yet I was still buying those luxury bottles for me.

Now my morning ritual while making my coffee is filling up all my mason jars to the 2 1/2 litres recommended worth.

By simply doing that I drink my daily allowance where ever I am.

The kids all have the VOSS bottles and are really good at topping them up, and if there’s a spare bottle going i’ll top them up also, I am still not great at drinking more if the bottle becomes empty. Habit Guys!!!!

The coffee pot doesn’t call as much when there is more jars to finish.

I have previously posted about other ways I try to reduce my personal footprint and I honestly take my hat off to large families that really have none each week.

I took away obvious things like liquid soap and put back hard.

My sanitary wear as been washables or Luna cup, something which I have encouraged my own daughter to understand.

I learnt to bake rather than buy packaged goods, and for me I Make my own Toothpaste, Deodorant, body wash scrub and moisturiser from natural products.

Large Paper Sacks of potatoes rather than plastic bags or chips etc.

I am braver with labelling my self now than I used to be. IE I am Vegan or I follow a Raw Food Diet, Te-total etc.

I feel that Vulnerability is OK now as I believe my tribe supports me ( I pick only supportive friends) and doesn’t look to trip me up if I stumble, a cooked Carrot say, instead of Raw or non vegan mayo. Ive found over t

Daily I am cultivating my way without judgement.

I blog to share what I see and feel, knowledge I learn on my way, never to make someone else not feel enough or there not doing enough.

In my true eye, I feel anyone who is trying is doing enough, there doing the best they can right now with what they have.

So here goes with some facts for you to play with, with that you can make choices and see how you can cultivate them into your own life.

Some Plastic bottles take longer than others to degrade.

My plastic bottles where like that paper thin plastic, imagine the harder ones that hold cordial….!!

Four Hundred and Fifty Years!!!!!! ((((((450))))) years is the average time for a plastic bottle to decompose, some up to 1’000 years.

Can you image my reality check when I really had to sit with the fact that on a daily basis if all my water came from plastic that was three 2 litre bottles in the landfill a day.

I have learnt through research that 90% of all plastic bottles don’t even get re-cycled. Around 60 million bottles end up on landfill every single day!!!!!!!! DAY.

Around 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year, that is equivalent of a garbage truck emptying plastic into the ocean every Single SECOND. GOD DAM !!!!!

The world economic forum predicts that the ocean will contain around 937 million tons of plastic and only 895 million tons of fish.

Not that I am eating the fish but heck I certainly wouldn’t want to either as already we are seeing the damaging effects on the fish from swallowing plastic.

When we have knowledge We have Action and choice.

So today I raise my Mason Jar of water too you all with Universal love.

Om Shanti…. Shankara Durga x

We all have stories, we all have shadows.

When I think I have worked on mine something else appears. Some do not even need work. But its our response to those feeling that leave us sad, sick, frustrated that need work on.

Do the work and I believe we stop holding our selves back.

Life is Amazing.

And then its Awful.

And then its amazing again.

And in between the amazing and the awful, its ordinary and mundane and routine.

Breath in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary.

That’s just living.

Heart breaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life.

And its breathtakingly beautiful. LR Knost

Today I’m going to show you vulnerability I’m going to show up for you.

I’m going to hold space for you.

And I’m going to be completely open on why I know for sure and understand my previous blog on how we create our own illnesses.

I’m going to break down dreams, weight, fatigue and ailments for you and explain their underlying meanings.

Which means I’m showing you me.

I want to really bring you in with this.

I want you to be open about your own issues and see if we can work through them together.

I believe our environment, toxins pesticides the air we breathe creates illness in our body.

I believe the food that we consume if not cleaning natural creates disease in the body.

But I also believe even when you sort these things out we need to work deep on the mind because if you think you’re right or wrong then you’re right.

The power of thought controls us and we decide if we’re going to have a good or a bad day no matter how we break it down its that simple.

So to work on my recurring issues I did a big board on the wall and wrote them all out, I’m going to break down each one individually and explain.

A lot of my issues have been there from childhood and I’ve taken them into adult hood subconsciously, not always being aware of it.

I want to be open with you about this to make you brave enough to deal with your own.

Adrenal problems, deep-rooted anxiety, no longer caring for self, defeatism.

So Anxiety because I felt defeated in whatever I did. I gave up in fear of being seen.

Weight issues

weight on hips – anger a parents.

Weight on hips –  packed childhood anger, rage at father.

So I worked on these issues years ago but something triggered them a couple of years ago again.

My parents let me down in so many ways but I have to accept they where on their own journey and whether they did or they didn’t do their best it is just that. So I wrote them a letter and forgave them and then destroyed the letter.

I didn’t just criticise them as parents, I also thanked them for many other things they taught me that has made me the person I am today.

My mother carried her weight the same away as me, I was aware of her issues with her weight from a young child.

We can’t blame everything on genetics and the fact that it’s hereditary.

My mother was unloved by her own mother and was very angry towards her.

Weight issues

*Fear of failure and being seen

*Resistance to forgive

*Running away from feelings.

So I had to work on all of those and the biggest one.

When you say enough times it really works.

Your / their opinion of me is none of my business.

Gosh right!!!! a real cheek jerk-er.

When you practice it enough it really does work.

Lack of love for what one does

Resistance, change, learn, fail, be seen.

Well fatigue and its meanings !!!! I had to work on them and when we’re open to change we fix it all.

Low blood pressure

Something I’ve had from birth.

something which is low down to the training I do, !!!!! So I thought for years !!! But well there’s a pattern here Right.

Meaning – lack of love as a child.

Feet problems – mine in particular would  get very hot in the night burn and feel heavy.

Meaning – fear of the future and not stepping forward in life.

This has a lot to do with the decisions I made, other people I surround myself had left me painfully fearful, questionable to trust.

Dream my teeth are falling out

Meaning – decisions, long-standing indecisiveness, inability to break down ideas for analysis and decisions.

Hands hot hands ache in particular when sleeping.

Meaning clutch, and grip. Grasping and letting go.

Little finger (on  left hand slightly bent and disfigured looks broken).

Meaning represents family also pretending.

This was done in the nail bar many years ago and at the time I was thinking why do I need to do this to my hands. My mum always had beautiful nails.

I believe the representation of the family connected to this is my family before I was married with children.

Trust issues

I have been failed by people more times that I wish to share, from there the distrust of human beings stems.

My father was very dishonest

I have had relationships that have proven to be financially and emotionally dishonest.

I believe in the law of attraction and that I had attracted this into my life !!!

don’t get me wrong it certainly makes me feel like the The victim when I want to feel sorry for myself.

But again I’ve held space with this for some time.

I know it will never happen again and I trust all.

So by mapping out all of this I’ve been able to brake it down again .

Some if not most were fixed by consistency, consistent with my mind body and soul.

My fitness training and my dedication to results and diet.

My own self belief fixed the rest and forgiveness to my parents and others that had done me injustice along the way.

I am a fantastic mother.

I am a fucking warrior.

When I dug deep, dealt with my inner child and my shadows I was reborn and chose my name.

I legally changed it to Shankara Durga and for you my family the meaning is.

Shankara means the Destroyer of all doubt.

Doer of good deeds.

destroys all our doubts and stabilises our faith.

Sameness,union,self, realisation .

Durga means mother goddess who Unleashes her divine wrath against the wicked for the liberation of the oppressed and entails destruction to empower creation, goddess of war, a warrior who’s mythology centres around combating evil and daemonic forces that threaten peace prosperity, power of good over evil. goddess Durga, representing the power of supreme being, preserving moral order and righteousness in the creation. A place of protection, protecting mankind from evil and misery.

So I’ve been completely vulnerable and open to you all. Let me help you send me a private message with any deep rooted issues or pain that you have from your body and let’s work through them together.

I also offer one-to-one sessions, groups and zooms for people that really want to dig deep and break the repetitive cycle by stepping out of their shadows.

let me know your out there family.

Even a little x in the comments.

Shanti Shanti Shankara Durga……

How we create our own illnesses

Our physical ailments and illnesses are caused by conditions beliefs, fears, resentment, guilt anger and every other negative emotion or circumstance in our lives.

How we create our own illnesses depends upon our emotions regarding past and present life circumstances.

The physical element or disease.

On resolved and suppressed feelings grow and fester within the physical body.

The right side of the body relates to the masculine side of our nature the present and the physical.

The left side of the body relates to the feminine, emotional, past and spiritual.

Metaphysically, the motion of resentment grows inside us within the body.

The emotion of anger invariably explodes and bitterness eats into us or eats away at us.

Cancers, being growth, are primarily the result of a well Buried resentment. Cancers often become apparent generally 4 to 6 years after the occurrence of a traumatic life changing event.

Our own destructive emotions cause and create disease within our bodies but just as we are able to create illness, we can equally create wellness.

A reason on how we create our own illnesses, disease and disharmony in our lives is because too many times we deny the truth of the destructive nature and unresolved negative emotions.

We create our own illness in order to serve a distinct purpose leading us to a drastic, dramatic life change or unfolding of one’s true life purpose.

Breast cancer is often caused by resentment related to your mother and /or maternal side, your own birth experience, the birth of a child and or a broken link in the maternal side of the family.

The breast is the first connection between mother and child, so if there are any resentment or negative emotions, the body will invariably grow cancer in the right breast.

We create our own illnesses and sabotage our own well-being with a buildup of negative emotions .

Our growth can be blocked by a negative emotions, and these blockages need to be released in order to enable and achieve well-being.

Our belief systems are the foundations of our perceptions, so by changing the Belief we change the perception and therefore we change our reality.

Part of releasing old emotions and negative belief system has to do with connecting to the unconscious, subconscious mind in order to change the belief and Pattern of our behaviours.

We are able to use positive thinking to overcome negative conditions of all kinds. A mind shift or change of thought creates a change of physical realm. When we change the thought you change the reality of our circumstances.

The use of visualisations can be a very powerful productive tool visualising something is much more powerful than positive thinking and affirmation alone. The dynamics of using images as a means of communication between ourselves and our unconscious belief is an extremely powerful means of reiterating a message to the subconscious mind.

Once we understand the reasons why and how we create, illnesses, we can now remove its need to exist, and in turn we are able to create the wellness we seek.

Just as we create our own illnesses, we can reverse the effects and create an in-harmony, health and well-being in our lives through a number of positive means.

In today’s blog I’m going to give you a few examples of ailments we feel in the body and their representation and meanings.

Have you any unexplained ailments???? Please share, lets look at them together.

Remember knowledge is the Bomb. and with knowledge we can solve the problem…..

Shanti Shanti

Shankara…… x

The longest journey anyone can make is from the head to the heart. This year I have been flowing not striving to stay away from words like goals.

My intention was to learn to listen, listen to loved ones deeply, really deeply. This intention was implemented months before the coronavirus pushed us all inside our homes. As someone that is really connected to the elements, I felt something was coming, and I felt ready.

My belief is there is no fate but what we make for ourselves, fear can take us if we let it.

I am Not hasty to believe a thing even if everyone repeats it, even if it is written in the holy scripture or spoken by a revered teacher.

I Accept only those which accord with my own reason and which in practice brings benefit and happiness.

I had a beautiful slow yoga class this afternoon, at the end our teacher asked if it was enough !!!!! was it fast enough, hard enough!!!!!

As someone that as pushed hard physically all my life it was hard to resist to say and want more.

“If it is not challenging you, then it is not changing you”.

“if its not hurting, it’s not working”.

“what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger”.

Great Quotes Right !!!!!!

And as temporary motivators I think there all great quotes.

In the class I explained why I wanted Yoga in my life.

I want my body to receive love not push against its natural flow, which is what I’ve been doing for over 36 years of my life.

From the age of 10 I have been running and pushing my body to prove my worth, from running at school to then joining the Army.

I was not good enough as a daughter in my father’s eyes, I was not good enough in some men’s eyes as a female soldier!!!! They made that decision before they even new me just from my sex.

So, I have pushed physically, I have pushed educationally always proving my worth.

I have never questioned if I am good enough, as I know I am physically and mentally.

Its no longer about men vs women…… We have weak and strong men and women physically and mentally. I have been blessed to work with a selection of amazing people, I have seen it up front.

We can all push hard and be an amazing version of ourselves if we want too.

So, let go back to why I decided to blog today after my yoga class.

The yin to my yang (Sarah) said that she felt like she could have done more on our weeks of lockdown, that others had achieved so much.

We do that don’t we, we naturally put pressure on ourselves, our worth. If our day is not hard then we cannot justify our existence.

Well that was my old thought process. And I say thought, I certainly was not conscious of any of this. This is all sub conscious deep-rooted beliefs slowly filtered in there from childhood.

I hardly saw my mother relaxed, she was always cleaning our home and working, supporting us all as my father was not a reliable source of anything. So, I guess my drive to hustle hard started there.

Then I soon understood how my father saw women as a lower form to men. So, I hustled harder, so much so I joined the Army to prove my worth…!!! Look at me Daddy aren’t I Strong and tough.

Goldie Hawn …. Pte Benjamin you have a lot to answer tooooo!!!!! Lol.

When our Prime Minister Boris Johnson called the lock down on Friday the 20th March, me and my four children did just that, we retreated to our home and sat.

My husband was essential so was not able to stay safe with us and as carried on working throughout, working away from home. Thank you, Lenny. Kisses x

For me this was not a time to do more, for me it was a time of sitting and reflection.

Some people took up more outdoor exercise, I did the opposite my trainers where put away.

We read books, listened, and rested, played games, and painted, learned how to be still, and listen more deeply.

We danced, I prayed and meditated, taught myself how to French braid and made some spiritual hair wraps for my dreds, while the world began to heal.

For possibly the first time in my 46 years of life I felt Allowed to sit, guilt free, only getting out of my PJs for essential food shopping. Thankyou Universe.

Kitty O’meara as a beautiful poem that says when the danger passed and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.

I hope this period as been for you what you needed and wanted. I will be forever grateful to the workers that could not stand still and had to step into the Pandemic.

Let us stop defining ourselves by what we do or who we know. Embrace all aspects of our self; honour our strengths and acknowledge the weaknesses.

Know our truth in the moment and hold to our truth even in the face of adversity.

Consciously choose our friends and support system.

And most importantly let go of the need for people to like you….

Sometimes stubbornness feels like strength.

Underlying it though is a vulnerability that is often afraid of the unknown, or it is your own fear of change.

Allow yourself to be free and your strength will slowly come.

Health is the greatest possession.

Contentment is the greatest treasure.

Confidence is the greatest friend.

Non- being is the greatest joy.

Kicking off from our last post on adrenal fatigue.

Our adrenal glands are probably one of the most crucial organs to affect mental health.

They are situated above your kidneys and help you cope with stress by producing chemicals such as norepinephrine and adrenaline.

During stressful periods, Adrenal glands go into overdrive and release their chemicals in large amounts, causing many physical symptoms, which we skirted over on the last adrenal fatigue post.

Our heart beats faster, breathing increases, sugar is released into your body for more energy, and blood flow increases to your muscles and brain to give them more oxygen and energy.

This keeps our body and brain alert and ready for action.

This state is also known as the fight or flight response, which humans and other animals develop as a primal response to threat and fear. This primal response still kicks in when we experience stress today.

Unfortunately, in today’s world we are under constant stress from work, phone calls, bills, deadlines, traffic, loud noses, computer vibrations, relationships, unresolved emotions, high cost of living, late nights and other pressures of life , our body does not distinguish this from stress from the threat of an animal coming to eat us.

It’s all about survival. We never have a chance to switch off. Constant stress is unnatural for our bodies to experience and it drives our adrenal gland into exhaustion.

Other issues also lead to adrenal burnout like poor diet, lack of exercise, long-term coffee use, high sugar intake, poor stress management, environmental toxicity, and heavy metal toxicity, especially copper toxicity.

Adrenal burnout, adrenal fatigue or hypoadrenia is now one of the most common elements in society today and it’s likely leading cause of most chronic health problems, including anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, poor immunity, heart disease, insomnia, low sexual performance and interest, and thyroid problems.

Let me explain this using a client by the name of Daisy.

So Daisy was attacked by a lion while on safari in Kenya, a few years later her business started going through some financial difficulties.

The initial shock of the Lion attack had stressed her  adrenal glands And then additional stress of her failing business pushed her further into adrenal exhaustion.

Over the following years even though her business recovered Daisy developed anxiety, insomnia and mild depression. Even though she felt she had fully recovered from the scare of the Lion attack and her business was picking up again, her anxiety  did not disappear.

Because Daisies brain and adrenal system was still stuck in shock and stress from a few years ago, she was living a normal life with a unconsciously stressed mind and exhausted adrenal glands.

With the help of a counsellor, meditation to help calm her mind  and her acceptance that she was safe now, we then put her on B complex multi vitamins, adrenal nourishing herbs to replenish her exhausted adrenal glands

Now look at your own life, look at how your feeling and look at the events that may have happened in that life time.

Quick ways of helping adrenal fatigue

Getting a full nights sleep most needing 8 to 9 hours minimum,

Plenty of fresh clean water every day, and taking the processed food and sugars out of your diet.

Obviously the massive stressors is our day-to-day life looking at our home and work environment to see how we can reduce stress there.

Using nutritional supplements, which contain high amounts of nutrients, in addition to eating healthy foods is often necessary to cope with stress and ensure a more complete recovery.

Food such as avocado, bananas, chicken, peaches, Cantelope, salmon, tuna, lime and beans and dried apricots nourish your adrenal glands.

I make a fantastic adrenal tea drying out some beautiful herbs and making a healing warm drink.

Exercise is very important for mental health however if your adrenal fatigue has become so severe that you’re too depressed to exercise then start with little movements in doors.

As I spoke briefly in the last post on adrenal fatigue about my own personal journey there’s been points in my life where the additional stress to the body of running had to stop and I had to take rest.

Not to confuse people, my running alone did not make me so depleted it was the additional environmental factors, emotional and physical that caused it in the first place.

Years of constant emotional trauma to the body.

Death of family members.

Death of pets

Financial impact those deaths had on my family and I

Two car crashes the last one leaving me physically and mentally traumatised.

Marriage break down/Divorce

Going into A mentally violent relationship after the marriage ending and trying to get out of it.

This is a scrapping of my traumas,

All or anyone of them can be enough to drain the adrenals so bad that if takes lots of work to repair them.

Talking about them and letting them go are also very important.

Dry skin Brushing, i will share more on this.

Removing toxic items like shower gels, creams, deodorants and looking at more natural body care.

what we absorb and inhale as a great effect on our health.

And what we think the most about we become, we are not victims of our past.

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

Namasta…… Stay You

Below is one mans story of today.

we as humans are forever learning and evolving.

what we think today can change tomorrow.

As a white Privileged women I am evolving daily, and working on my own personal subconsciousness, acknowledgements and understanding of white privilege.

I think its brave of any white person to try and understand Racism, we will never understand it in the eyes of a person of colour.

I give you pete as he himself begins his own journey of understanding.

I think we all agree that Slavery is wrong and was wrong on every level conceivable. The act of capturing and holding people of a certain culture against their will and forcing them to work long hours against their will, often with no rest, no welfare or support and for little or no pay is indeed sickening.

The sacrifices made by those enslaved served only to bolster and improve the lives of others, and to increase the quality of life of those fortunate enough to have some wealth, but not their own. These people often suffered intolerable abuse which today would enrage even the most cold hearted.

How amazing that the world has changed. Oh, wait a minute. let us just look at that again. The world in fact hasn’t changed. There are still many many people in the world who are enslaved, and indeed are forced to work against their will and often imprisoned and badly treated, and for what ? For money, for greed, for power, and in some cases for the western world to enjoy our comfortable lives.

Slavery exists in 6 countries of this world, and we really need to open our eyes to our own agenda. Amongst the worst is actually India and China, and every last one of us has a part to play in that. Look at what we buy. We are all guilty of fuelling slavery in some form, even those currently pulling down statues in the name of anti slavery. The phones, the laptops, the bicycles, the clothes we all wear, probably somewhere along the line, has been touched by someone working against their will. Think about that for a minute.

Slavery is often characterized as an archaic, inhumane practice of the past. But it isn’t, as much as we would like it to be. Slavery is still a grim reality, one that millions of people are trapped in. In 2016, the Global Slavery Index counted 45.8 million enslaved people in 167 countries, with one in four victims being children. Still, there is progress being made; In 2018, in Mauritania, a West African country where slavery is an ongoing problem, courts sentenced two slave owners to 10 and 20 years in prison, marking the country’s harshest ruling against slavery yet.

Today, slavery takes many forms, from sex trafficking and forced marriage to forced and bonded labour. Here are 6 countries where slavery is still a part of life — for now.

1 Mauritania

Mauritania was the last country in the world to outlaw slavery in 1981. It wasn’t until 2007 that the government, facing international pressure, passed a law that would prosecute slave owners. Still, since then, the country has only prosecuted three cases of slavery, and according to the 2016 GSI, 1.06% of the population still live in bondage, with many children being born into slavery. This number changes, though — the aid group SOS Slavery, using a broader definition, estimated that 20% of the population was enslaved.

2 India

India is home to the largest number of enslaved people in the world. An estimated 18,354,700 people, or 1.40% of the population, are reportedly living in modern slavery, which includes intergenerational bonded labor, forced child labor, forced marriage, and commercial sexual exploitation, among other forms. According to a report from Free The Slaves, poor villagers in particular are vulnerable to being enslaved through debt bondage and bonded labor, both of which are illegal. They’re forced to work in unsanitary, dangerous conditions in an effort to repay a constantly growing debt. India’s slavery issue is similar to neighbors Bangladesh and Pakistan.

And while India’s intelligence agency advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “discredit” the September 2017 report by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Australian rights group Walk Free Foundation, the United Nations defended its research, according to Reuters. (Walk Free Foundation published a separate report earlier about India estimates — ILO did not single out countries.) The labor ministry vowed to rescue 18 million bonded labors by 2030.

3 China

In China, an estimated 3,388,400 people are victims of modern slavery (0.25% of the population), according to the 2016 GSI. Forced and child labor is one notable problem in the region, and it’s an issue that made headlines in 2007, after police rescued 450 captives — some of whom were children as young as 14 — who had been forced to work 16 to 20 hours a day with no pay in brick kilns. Many of them were beaten and even burned, and barely given enough food to live.

The trafficking of women and children into forced marriages and the sex trade is also a huge issue, according to the GSI. Female immigrants who are in the country illegally and reach out to others for help are especially at risk of being secretly sold as brides. An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 North Korean women were living in China and enduring different types of slavery in 2012, The Christian Science Monitor reports.

4 Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan, 3.97% of the population were found to be living in modern slavery, according to the Global Slavery Index 2016 report. The country is one of the largest producers of cotton, but at great cost; every year, the government forces over one million citizens to work in the cotton fields for weeks on end, Geographical reports. Those who refuse risk losing their jobs, or, if they’re students, expulsion. And it’s presented as “voluntary” work, according to the New York Times. In October 2013, then-president Islam Karimov praised the cotton workers: “Since olden days cotton has been seen as a symbol of whiteness, of spiritual purity. And only people of pure mind and beautiful soul are capable of farming it.” Uzbekistan phased out minors in 2015 after international boycotts.

Current president Shavkat Mirziyoyev appears to be reforming this practice — thousands of school teachers, college students and healthcare workers were recalled from cotton fields last September, according to Reuters.

Some human rights groups remain doubtful that real change will follow.

5 Libya

In 2016, 1.130% of the Libyan population lived in modern slavery, and in only 2017, the country shocked the world after a CNN investigation exposed actual slave auctions. Grainy cell phone footage of two young men being sold for the equivalent of $400 each seemed like something out of a nightmarish film, and sparked global outrage and protests. According to a report by Time, many migrants and refugees attempting to reach Europe by sea get caught in Libya and are kept in “horrific” detention centers where they are vulnerable to being beaten, raped, and sold as slave labor. Shortly after CNN’s original report, the country’s government announced that they’d launched a formal investigation into the problem .

6 North Korea

North Korea is a number one offender, according to the 2016 GSI, with 4.37% of the population living in modern slavery — the highest proportion, though not number, in the world. In 2015, UN investigator Marzuki Darusman estimated that 50,000 North Korean citizens had been sent abroad to work in mining, logging, and the textile and construction industries. Sent mainly to China, Russia and the Middle East, these enslaved people generated around $2.3 billion per year for the government. Meanwhile, the worker themselves often worked up to 20 hours per day under horrendous conditions, and only earned on average between $120-$150 per month. Employers paid “significantly higher amounts” to the North Korean government, Darusman claimed. The New York Times reports that the conditions are so desperate in North Korea that laborers often pay bribes to go to Russia.

Slavery is ubiquitous in our “modern” world, even if we may not see it on a daily basis. Slavery is hidden, it’s quiet, it’s insidious.

Black Lives Matter, absolutely they do, as does all life on the planet, and we should learn from the past and never let those days return. We should embrace differences and accept that really, we are indeed all the same.

Personally, when I look at people, I dont see colour. What I see are attitudes and actions for it is these that define us as a person. Our thoughts will become our emotions, and in turn our emotions become our actions. That is an absolute fact.

Please, do not pull down monuments, or desecrate memorials to our war dead. Instead, let us all reflect on the past, and the misdeeds of our ancestors and let us all move forward with a clear aim to be kind to each other, and to learn from each other. Let us all pressure those countries that indeed permit slavery to continue right at this moment in this modern time and let us not let violent division define who we are. We can help by reducing our consumerism, from buying only what we need, from recycling clothing, not falling into the fashion trap, and envy of those that have the latest trainers. If the demand is reduced, the need is reduced and lives can be saved this way.

Remember – what we think, we become.

Love and respect to all.
